  3. COURSE DESCRIPTION

    This course focuses on health and illness concepts across the lifespan. The scope, risk factors, physiologic processes, attributes, and clinical management of the concepts of homeostasis/regulation, sexuality/reproduction, protection/movement, and emotional processes are included in the course content. Exemplars, evidence-based practices, collaborative care, healthcare standards, nursing informatics/technologies, and care resources associated with the concepts of the course are discussed. Normal physiology and healthy adaptations of the patient are integrated into the concept/exemplar content. This is a three credit hour course. Prerequisites: NU 113A Introduction to Nursing Concepts, NU 113B Principles of Nursing Practice. Corequisites: NU 123A Health Care Participant, NU 123B Nursing Pharmacology, NU 124A Assessment and Health Promotion.

  4. COURSE RATIONALE / TRANSFERABILITY

    This course is transferrable to other New Mexico nursing programs utilizing the New Mexico Nursing Education Consortium (NMNEC) statewide common curriculum. This course has no guarantee of transferability to another college or university that is not participating in NMNEC statewide common curriculum.

    A grade of 77 or higher is the minimum passing grade for nursing. A grade of C or higher is

    Calculation of Course Grade:

    a. Unit Examinations (60%)

    The student will be given proctored 50 question computer exams to assess mastery of content for multiple units. Unit exams will be based on theoretical material and application of practical skills. See course calendar for dates and times.

    If it is absolutely necessary to miss an exam, the student must notify faculty at least 2 hours prior to the exam. A makeup exam will be arranged and must be taken as soon as the student returns to class. The exam may be a different version or format.

    Unit Exam Content Review Process:

    • After the exam has been completed by all students in the course and grades have been posted, the faculty will hold a content review session with the class. During this session, concepts that were most missed on the exam will be discussed with the class. Individual exam reviews will not be done.

    b. Final Examination (20%)

    There will be a proctored computer comprehensive final exam consisting of 100 questions. It will not include questions from unit exams. See course calendar for date and time.

    c. Unit Exams and Final Exam Average

    The first calculation is an average of the unit exam scores and the final exam score. Each unit exam score and the final exam score are weighted equally. An average score of 77% or higher is required.

    When a score of 77% or higher is NOT earned for the unit exam scores and the final exam score average, other course grades are not eligible for computation into a final grade and the student will earn a letter grade of D or F.

    When a score of 77% or higher is earned for the unit exam scores and final exam score average, other course grades are eligible for computation into the final course average.

    Course assignment grades are calculated with other course grades to determine a final grade.

    A course-specific, grade-weighting percentage chart is included in the syllabus of each course.

    When a weighted grade of 77% or higher is NOT earned, the student earns a letter grade of D or F.

    d. Course Assignments

    An assignment is considered to be, but not limited to the following:
    • Exams, care plans, journals, standardized exams (ATIs, etc.), pass/fail assignments, quizzes, posters, presentations, and projects.
    • All assignments should be completed and submitted by due date and time.
    • If an assignment(s) is not completed by the due date, a failing grade may be earned and the grade may result in the student failing the course.

    Graded Assignments

    Late assignments (graded):
    o A late assignment is any assignment submitted after the scheduled due date and time. For example, if an assignment is due by 5:00 pm on a certain day but turned in after 5:00pm on that date, the assignment will be considered one day late.
    o Ten (10) points will be deducted from a late assignment grade for each day the assignment is late.
    o After 10 consecutive days, the student will receive a grade of “0” for the assignment; however, all late assignments must be satisfactorily completed and submitted.
    o All late (printed) assignments must be clocked-in using the time clock in the Nursing Program Office and the clock stamp must be performed in the presence of a nursing program employee. If the assignment was to be turned in on Canvas, the student must email the assignment to his/her instructor and it will be timed and dated according to the time and date the email was sent.
    o All late (printed) assignments must be initialed by a nursing program employee when turned in.
    o Printed assignments must be turned in during Nursing Program Office business hours.

    Pass/Fail Assignments

    The student must satisfactorily complete all pass/fail assignments and achieve at least the designated minimum passing score for the assignment (if specified) in order to pass the course. Failure to complete all assignments in the course may result in course failure.

    A pass/fail assignment is one in which the student is required to complete by the designated due date. Additionally, Module Zero must be completed by the due date, for every course, every semester, no exceptions.

    For most pass/fail assignments, the assignment is considered “passed” when it is completed by the due date regardless of the achieved score. Some pass/fail assignments may have a designated score that must be achieved by the due date in order to pass; however, this score does not count in the overall grade for the course (these pass/fail assignments will be specified in the syllabus).
    If the assignment is not completed by the due date, it is considered “failed” and the following consequences will be assigned to the student:

    • 1st missed assignment:

    o The student will be placed on an action plan by his/her advisor and will be required to complete an alternate assignment by the specified time. This assignment will be related to the content of the assignment missed and may be in another format. If the alternate assignment is not completed by the specified time, it will count as the 2nd missed assignment (see below).

    • 2nd missed assignment:

    o Student will be placed on a learning contract by his/her advisor and will be required to write a paper on professionalism. A rubric and guidelines for the paper will be provided and must be followed. The learning contract will continue with the student throughout enrollment in the nursing program.

    • 3rd missed assignment:

    o Student will be required to meet with the Administrative Nursing Review Committee to discuss repetition of the unprofessional behavior. The student may earn a failing grade for the course and be unable to progress to the next level in the nursing program.

    Concept Maps – ATI Systems Disorder Template (12% total, 3% per assignment)

    The student will complete an ATI Systems Disorder Template for each of the disorders assigned in the syllabus/course schedule. These are individual assignments and must be submitted by on Canvas by the due date. Late concept maps will not be accepted. If a student fails to submit the concept map in canvas by the due date, a grade of zero will be given. No exceptions.

    Critical Thinking Project – Stress Management Presentation (5%)

    Students will work in groups and develop a stress management presentation to be presented in class. Rubric will be provided. Students will be assigned to groups by the instructor.

    ATI Proctored Exam (3%)

    The student will take proctored exams and remediate. The student will earn a grade per the ATI grading policy. See grading policy below.

    Pass/Fail Assignments (ATI)

    The student must complete all assigned activities in Elsevier Nursing Concepts Online (NCO) 2.0, and ATI as assigned in the syllabus/course schedule. Specific guidelines will be discussed during class. Instructors may use these assignments in class, as homework, or as a ticket to class. These assignments are pass/fail.

    Academic Honesty
    Each student is expected to maintain the highest standards of honesty and integrity in online academic and professional matters. The College reserves the right to take disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal, against any student who is found guilty of academic dishonesty or otherwise fails to meet these standards. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, dishonesty in quizzes, tests, or assignments; claiming credit for work not done or done by others; and nondisclosure or misrepresentation in filling out applications or other College records. Cheating or gaining illegal information for any type of graded work is considered dishonest and will be dealt with accordingly.

    Attendance Policy
    Attendance is required at every session of each course for which the student is enrolled. When unavoidable circumstances make attendance impossible, students must provide a satisfactory explanation of their absences to their professors. College-sponsored activities are considered excused absences and the appropriate sponsor of those students who will be absent from class will notify professors. Students having absences due to college-sponsored activities will need to make arrangements with the affected classes / professor to take care of required work; however, arrangements for make-ups should be made within a reasonable time frame, usually within one week of the absence. Regarding make-up work, absences due to late registration are considered the same as regular absences.

    Cell Phones/Pagers
    All cell phones and pagers must be turned off when the student is participating in any lecture, laboratory, or other learning activity.

    Classroom Conduct
    The professor is responsible for maintaining a class environment best suited for effective learning. By registering for this class, the student is assumed to have entered into an agreement with New Mexico Junior College and the professor to attend the class regularly and to behave in an appropriate manner at all times. Disruptive behavior may result in the student being removed from the class.

    Food and Drink Policy
    Food items and soft drinks may not be consumed in NMJC classrooms. Students are also discouraged from bringing food and drink items into the classroom even though these items remain in sealed packaging. Bottled water is permissible.

    No Children in the Classroom
    In order to adhere to instructional procedures as well as maintain the safety of children, NMJC’s policy of no children in the classrooms (lecture, lab, etc.) will be followed.

    Plagiarism
    Offering the work of another as one’s own, without proper acknowledgment, is plagiarism; therefore, any student who fails to give credit for quotations or essentially identical expression of material taken from books, encyclopedias, magazines and other reference works, or from the themes, reports, or other writings of a fellow student, is guilty of plagiarism. Plagiarism violates the academic honesty policy and is considered cheating.

    Smoking/Use of Tobacco
    New Mexico Junior College is cognizant of the health hazards associated with smoking / use of tobacco for the smoker, as well as the non-smoker. In an effort to provide a healthy environment for students, employees, and others who may frequent the campus, NMJC prohibits smoking / use of tobacco inside any campus building or facility.

    Tutoring Assistance
    Free tutoring services are available to all NMJC students through Brainfuse and the Academic Success Center located at the Pannell Library on the 1st floor.

    Withdrawal Policy
    Regular, punctual attendance is required for all classes at NMJC. Although the professor has the right to drop any student who has missed the equivalent of 2 weeks of instruction (based on a 16 week semester) whether it’s a face to face, online, or a hybrid course, it is not guaranteed that the professor will drop the student. If the student chooses to stop attending a class, he/she should withdraw from the class by accessing your student account in the T-Bird Web Portal at www.nmjc.edu, or submitting the required paperwork to the Registrar’s Office by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2019. All students are encouraged to discuss their class status with the professor prior to withdrawing from the class.
