    This course is an introduction to the servicing of Ford Motor Company vehicles. Areas of instruction include the selection and use of Ford service publications, the interpretation of VIN Codes, body styles and car lines, repair order processing, the safe and correct use of hand tools, and precision measuring instruments and equipment. Specific on-vehicle instruction for pre-delivery operations, campaign procedures, basic service operations for wind noise and water leaks, and engine cooling and lubrication systems are also covered. Each student must be officially accepted into the Ford ASSET program according to Ford and NMJC entrance requirement policies. This is a four credit hour course.


    This course incorporates fundamentals important to obtaining employment upon graduation. It may not be suitable if used as a transfer to institutions of higher learning. Please consult with the receiving institution if you intend to transfer this course credit to another institution.



    A. Tools and Equipment

    ASSET students are required to provide their own basic tool set as outlined in the NMJC/ASSET Student Information Manual. This tool set must be on campus and complete during all on-campus training sessions. The set must also be complete and in good working order at the sponsoring dealership during every coop session. It is the student’s responsibility to replace all lost or broken tools. Each ASSET student has a considerable investment in tools and they are very important to the accomplishment of course objectives. Students are encouraged to have their tools marked and keep them secure and clean.

    A considerable investment in special tools, equipment, and service literature has been made by NMJC and Ford Motor Company to support the ASSET students’ training. The proper use and care of these items by students is expected at all times. Abuse and loss of tools, equipment, and service literature are not acceptable. Loss of these materials will deny essential training for classmates and future class members. Care of these items is directly related to productivity on the job. Having the proper equipment in good working order directly impacts the income of both the technician and the employer. It also has significant impact on customer satisfaction with Ford Motor Company vehicles and service.

    B. Dress Requirements

    The main objectives of the ASSET program are to develop a professional and productive automotive technician. Proper image and appearance are an important part of becoming a professional. One of the goals of the ASSET program at NMJC is to help students develop a positive self image and to help develop their full potential as an automotive service professional. In the achievement of this goal, a positive image conscious approach is stressed throughout the program.

    A neat, clean appearance is essential in developing the desired professional attitude. Employers like their employees to wear appropriate uniforms because of this factor and its influence on customer relations and safety. To help promote this ideal, sponsoring dealers provide work uniforms for their students. Students are expected to wear these uniforms and keep them clean and in good repair.

    Uniforms must be worn whenever students are participating in any class activity on campus. Shirts should be properly tucked into trousers. Also, leather work shoes, provided by the student (tennis shoes are not allowed), should be worn at all times. If the employer does not provide uniform pants, students will provide pants that meet industry and NMJC standards.

    Compliance with the uniform requirement will contribute to good grades. Non-compliance can be reason for not allowing a student to attend class or lab work. Neat and clean grooming of hair and beards is also highly encouraged in the program. Long hair can be a safety hazard when working on vehicles. Therefore, students are encouraged to wear hair and beards at appropriate lengths.

    Students attending New Mexico Junior College will be evaluated according to the following grading scale:

    						90 - 100%	=	A
    						80 -  89%	=	B
    						70 -  79%	=	C
    						60 -  69%	=	D
    					 	 0 -  59%	=	F

    A. Course Grade

    Student performance and knowledge acquisition will be monitored using projects completed, lecture and reading quizzes, periodic major segment tests, a final examination, attendance and the instructor's personal evaluation of the student's progress and attitude. The final course grade will be earned and distributed based on the items listed below.

    B. Laboratory Activity

    Student performance and skill development will be evaluated by monitoring the completion of work sheets, workbooks, and demonstrated skill performance to a time and quality standard. Instructor one-on-one critique will be used to determine proficiency in skill performance areas. Performance objectives incorporated into work sheets and workbooks account for a significant portion of the lab grades received. In addition, students will be evaluated on their ability to exhibit professionalism. This includes wearing of appropriate work clothes, attitude and cooperation, following safety rules, and overall appearance.

    C. Grade Definitions

    Grades are based upon the quality of work done, that is, upon the actual accomplishment in courses offered for credit. Grades indicating the standing of students are issued at the end of each semester. Mid-semester grades are preliminary nature only for the use of the counselor and staff, and are made known to the students only for counseling purposes. The mid-semester grades will not appear on the student’s college record. Letter grades are defined in the NMJC catalog. The same definitions are used for this course. They are as follows:

    A = Superior Work
    B = Better than Average
    C = Average
    D = Passing
    F = Failing

    D. Incomplete

    In keeping with NMJC policy, all work for Incomplete (I) grades must be made up within a period of one semester. (See current NMJC Incomplete Grade policy for additional information.)

    E. Minimum Grade

    All Ford (FM) courses must be completed with a “C” or better to meet graduation requirements.

    G. Lab Exercises Grading Policy

    Lab exercises will be directed and documented through the use of worksheets. Students will complete specific tasks identified by the worksheet and respond to related questions as indicated. The instructor’s electronic grade book is the official record of worksheet completion/task competency. Students will be given regular reports of their progress in lab assignments. Points for worksheets will be awarded in the following manner:

    4 = Student has demonstrated hands-on competency in performing the task(s) identified by the worksheet and responded to related questions with 100% proficiency.

    3 = Student has demonstrated hands-on competency in performing the task(s) identified by the worksheet and responded to related questions with at least 80% proficiency.

    1 = Student has attempted to demonstrate hands-on competency in performing the task(s) identified by the worksheet, but requires more practice and/or responded to related questions with less than 80% proficiency.

    0 = Student has not attempted to complete the task(s) identified by the worksheet.


    New Mexico Junior College’s institutional student learning outcomes represent the knowledge and abilities developed by students attending New Mexico Junior College. Upon completion students should achieve the following learning outcomes along with specific curriculum outcomes for respective areas of study:


    A. General Course Objectives

    After completing this course, the student should be able to perform repairs, adjustments, and diagnostic procedures with demonstrated proficiency in Ford car and light truck maintenance procedures. Additionally, the student should be able to enter full-time employment as a Ford and/or Lincoln-Mercury automotive dealership Vehicle Maintenance Technician and should have the necessary skills, knowledge, and attitudes that will enable him/her to retain this employment and to continually make acceptable progress in this field.

    B. Objective Accomplishment

    Course objectives will be accomplished by providing the following learning activities:

    Study and discussion centered on the operational principles and safety aspects of specific hand tools, shop equipment, and hazardous materials.
    Study will include component purpose and design factors in appropriate areas and the laws and principles governing the component’s design and operation.

    Instruction focused on the development of a knowledge base that will provide the student with insight and understanding of the operational characteristics and associated failure modes of the components and systems being studied. Each student will facilitate this process through personal study, knowledge application, and task performance.

    Instruction to provide the knowledge necessary to perform repairs, adjustments, and diagnostic procedures with demonstrated proficiency.

    Performance objectives designed to support the development of industry guideline skill achievement by each student throughout the instructional period.

    C. Specific Course Objectives/Competencies

    After successful completion of this course, the student will be able to perform the following tasks and/or demonstrate knowledge in the following subjects related to the automotive repair industry and Ford Motor Company vehicle service specifications and guidelines.

    Describe the job opportunities available in the automotive service industry through ASSET training.

    Demonstrate safe work habits in the classroom and laboratory when working with all tools and shop equipment.

    Pass the CCAR Mechanical Safety Training Test.

    Demonstrate safe vehicle lifting procedures.

    Identify, select, and properly use the hand tools contained in the NMJC ASSET approved tool set.

    Define technician responsibilities.

    Identify, select, and properly use the precision measuring devices identified in the FCSD Automotive Measuring Devices & Systems training manual.

    Demonstrate the ability to select the correct FCSD service publication for the operations assigned by the instructor and promptly locate the information required.

    Demonstrate the ability to properly fill out a repair order.

    Explain warranty policies.

    Estimate automotive repair labor.

    Define the operation and purpose of the basic gasoline engine components.

    Properly perform a pre-delivery inspection as assigned by the instructor.

    Describe the contents of the Pre-Delivery Service Record.

    Locate informational tags and numbers on Ford Cars and Light Trucks including: Vehicle Identification Number, Vehicle Certification Label, Safety Compliance Certification Label, and the Vehicle Emission Certification Label.

    Identify the typical information found in the vehicle glove compartment.

    Identify the strategic sealing points on late model NAAO vehicles.

    Describe how the Ford vehicles are sealed during production.

    Explain the proper diagnostic techniques to use when determining the source of a leak.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the basic design and operation of the components in the various cooling systems covered by the course.

    Demonstrate the ability to diagnose common cooling system problems addressed in the course.

    Conduct on-vehicle tests for evaluating cooling system performance as covered in the course.

    Recognize the importance of safety precautions, preliminary inspections, and the performance of service operations as directed in FCSD service manuals.

    Identify and define the lubrication systems used in late model Ford engines.

    Define the operation of the basic lubrication system including the filtering systems and the common oil flow paths and lubrication methods.

    Identify and describe the four major components of the engine lubricating system.

    Identify and define the diagnostic techniques and failure analysis of engine lubricating systems recommended by FCSD.

    Identify and define the causes of excessive oil consumption.

    Identify and describe the following lubrication identifications: API Service Ratings, SAE Viscosity Grades, and the Energy Conserving Designations.

    Demonstrate the ability to select the proper engine lubricant per Ford Motor Company guidelines.

    Demonstrate the ability to repair/recondition internal and external fastener threads.

    Demonstrate the ability to properly aim headlights as directed by the instructor.

    Describe the ASE and STST technician certification programs and their importance to Ford Motor Company customer satisfaction goals and to the individual ASSET Student.

    All course participants must pass the Automotive Safety Test with a final score of 100%.

    It is the responsibility of all concerned to sustain a safe learning environment in the ASSET classroom and lab. Students must use all the safety precautions they have been taught and shown, discuss anything they are unsure of with their instructor, and report any unsafe condition to their instructor immediately. Every student should know the location of fire extinguishers and other safety equipment as well as procedures for first aid and for other emergencies, such as the need for emergency eye wash.

    Academic Honesty
    Each student is expected to maintain the highest standards of honesty and integrity in online academic and professional matters. The College reserves the right to take disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal, against any student who is found guilty of academic dishonesty or otherwise fails to meet these standards.     Attendance Policy
    Attendance is required at every session of each course for which the student is enrolled. When unavoidable circumstances make attendance impossible, students must provide a satisfactory explanation of their absences to their professors. College-sponsored activities are considered excused absences and the appropriate sponsor of those students who will be absent from class will notify professors. Students having absences due to college-sponsored activities will need to make arrangements with the affected classes / professor to take care of required work; however, arrangements for make-ups should be made within a reasonable time frame, usually within one week of the absence. Regarding make-up work, absences due to late registration are considered the same as regular absences.

    Cell Phones/Pagers
    All cell phones and pagers must be turned off when the student is participating in any lecture, laboratory, or other learning activity.

    Classroom Conduct
    The professor is responsible for maintaining a class environment best suited for effective learning. By registering for this class, the student is assumed to have entered into an agreement with New Mexico Junior College and the professor to attend the class regularly and to behave in an appropriate manner at all times. Disruptive behavior may result in the student being removed from the class.

    Food and Drink Policy
    Food items and soft drinks may not be consumed in NMJC classrooms. Students are also discouraged from bringing food and drink items into the classroom even though these items remain in sealed packaging. Bottled water is permissible.

    No Children in the Classroom
    In order to adhere to instructional procedures as well as maintain the safety of children, NMJC’s policy of no children in the classrooms (lecture, lab, etc.) will be followed.

    Offering the work of another as one’s own, without proper acknowledgment, is plagiarism; therefore, any student who fails to give credit for quotations or essentially identical expression of material taken from books, encyclopedias, magazines and other reference works, or from the themes, reports, or other writings of a fellow student, is guilty of plagiarism. Plagiarism violates the academic honesty policy and is considered cheating.

    Smoking/Use of Tobacco
    New Mexico Junior College is cognizant of the health hazards associated with smoking / use of tobacco for the smoker, as well as the non-smoker. In an effort to provide a healthy environment for students, employees, and others who may frequent the campus, NMJC prohibits smoking / use of tobacco inside any campus building or facility.

    Tutoring Assistance
    Free tutoring services are available to all NMJC students through Brainfuse and the Academic Success Center located at the Pannell Library on the 1st floor.

    Withdrawal Policy
    Regular, punctual attendance is required for all classes at NMJC. Although the professor has the right to drop any student who has missed the equivalent of 2 weeks of instruction (based on a 16 week semester) whether it’s a face to face, online, or a hybrid course, it is not guaranteed that the professor will drop the student. If the student chooses to stop attending a class, he/she should withdraw from the class by accessing your student account in the T-Bird Web Portal at, or submitting the required paperwork to the Registrar’s Office by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 27, 2019. All students are encouraged to discuss their class status with the professor prior to withdrawing from the class.
