  3. COURSE DESCRIPTION

    The role of community corrections within the Criminal Justice System; operation of the correctional institution; alternatives to incarceration; treatment and rehabilitation of offenders; distinction between parole and probation and the legal basis governing the supervision of juvenile and adult offenders placed on probation or parole.

  4. COURSE RATIONALE / TRANSFERABILITY

    This course is designed to provide the student with a basic understanding of the legal alternatives to incarceration for people found guilty of criminal behavior.

    This course has transferability to other colleges, but it is always advisable to check with the appropriate advisors/counselors at all applicable colleges.

  6. GRADING POLICY

    Students attending New Mexico Junior College will be evaluated according to the following grading scale:

    						90 - 100%	=	A
    						80 -  89%	=	B
    						70 -  79%	=	C
    						60 -  69%	=	D
    					 	 0 -  59%	=	F
    

    Module 0: 105points (in canvas) and
    MindTap Chapter Assignments/Exam 47 points per Chapter = 752

    These assignments will be completed (required) in MindTap. In canvas, on the Course Information Module, there are links and a step by step guide to how to navigate and get there. I will manually transfer grades into canvas from there.

    Weekly Discussions (50ea): 400 points
    These will be completed in Canvas under Weekly Modules.


    Canvas Essay Papers = (5) 500 These will be found in canvas under weekly modules and you must use the Rubric under course information module to complete.

    At the conclusion of this course, a student should have a basic knowledge of how the criminal justice system operates and a general understanding of how different areas of the criminal justice system work, such as: policing, the courts, corrections, juvenile justice and theories of criminology and the law.
    The course content of Probation, Parole & Community Corrections (CJ113D) supports NMJC’s mission of “promoting success through learning” by encouraging students to accomplish the following:
    • Identify and recognize the stages within the criminal justice system.
    • Identify and articulate the roles of individuals within the criminal justice system.
    • Identify and communicate the rights of defendants in the criminal justice system.
    • Analyze the significance of key court cases that have influenced the criminal justice system.
    • Apply each of the above in context of developing an awareness of self and community.

  9. SPECIFIC COURSE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

    Upon completion of this course a student should be able to:
    - Identify the historical development of community-based corrections
    - Recognize the different types of community-based correctional programs and their goals
    - Identify how community-based correctional programs operate, typical problems and their solutions
    -Recognize the basic success rates for the different types of community-based programs
    -Identify the special issues in community-based corrections

    Students,

    Module 0 will be due the 1st Thursday of the semester so you I can report Non-Attendance by Friday morning so it is IMPORTANT for you to complete Module 0 before Friday morning.

    After you have read the syllabus, please be sure to click on the link to the left titled "Modules". You will need to use these modules to keep you updated in the course. You can find all you need in there for each section.

    Please be sure to e-mail me ASAP if you have any problems or concerns. Thank you! Email Response time is 24 hours and grade response time is 1 week.

    You must also use word to submit your assignments or save it as a .RTF file if you are using Wordperfect. I cannot download the assignments from any other format.

    Be sure when you answer your questions, you refer to the Grading Rubric included in your assignment, which will explain the Assignment Expectations. I also expect each of you to cite your references. This does not have to be a big issue or something hard, but merely (Author or website, and page number) where you located the information to support your own personal ideas. With that being said, I also expect you to use something, such as the textbook, online websites or other court or law references to support your personal ideas. The discussions should be your personal “feelings” documented one way or another with another type of resource. Do not answer the questions by saying, “I think …” and leave it as that. Each question must be thoroughly explained. In some instances, it may take one paragraph and in others, it may take one page. There is no magic number or guide as to how long it should be.

    Response Times for E-mail and Grading in this Course:

    E-mail will be responded to within 24 hours.
    Assignments and exams will be graded and grades will be posted by the end of the day on Sunday of next week.

    Regular and punctual class attendance is important to the attainment of the educational objectives of this course. Attendance is required at all sessions of this course. Please note the Withdrawal Policy for additional information.

    Class begins promptly. If you are tardy, you must notify the instructor immediately after class; otherwise, you will be counted absent. If you leave class early, you will receive a tardy. Two tardies equal one absence. Students who have more than six absences in a MWF class, four absences in a TR class, or two absences in a night class may be dropped from this course. A student may lose the right to make up work missed once the maximum number of absences has been exceeded. All absences and extenuating circumstances need to be explained during office hours, not during class. If students know they are going to be absent, they should make prior arrangements with the instructor. Leave a message at 492-2714. The voice mail works twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. You may also e-mail me at rtitus@nmjc.edu or through the canvas mail function. The instructor's class roll is the official record of attendance. Attendance may be considered at the end of the semester if a student is within a point of a higher letter grade.

    Should a student be dismissed from the classroom due to some sort of disruption, I expect to see such student before the next time the class meets. Permanent dismissal may result if I deem it necessary to take the problem to the dean. If a student is asked to leave class for any reason, the student will be counted absent for that class period.

    Cell phones and any other electronic devices should be turned off and put away. Students are not allowed to text and/or use the internet during class time. Electronic devices include but are not limited to Ipads, Ipods, earbuds, and headphones. If this policy is abused, the student will be asked to leave the classroom. The student will receive a zero/absence for that day.

    If a student has a special health problem, he or she should (please) notify the instructor. (Please only discuss the situation with me during office hours.)

    All essays are to be word processed and submitted in standard font with one inch margins on standard 81\2" x 11" white paper. Handwritten work will not be accepted.

    Plagiarism is cheating, and any student found guilty of plagiarism will receive a zero on the assignment and possibly fail the class.

    PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION: Please use appropriate, professional language, grammar and structure in your emails. I will do the same. Do not send an email that looks and reads as though it were composed as a text message.

    Netiquette
    The professor is responsible for monitoring and evaluating student conduct and student behavior within the Canvas course. By registering for this class, the student is assumed to have entered into an agreement with New Mexico Junior College and the professor to log into the class regularly and to behave in an appropriate manner at all times. Disruptive behavior may result in the student being removed from the class and dropped for the semester.     Plagiarism
    Offering the work of another as one’s own, without proper acknowledgment, is plagiarism; therefore, any student who fails to give credit for quotations or essentially identical expression of material taken from books, encyclopedias, magazines and other reference works, or from the themes, reports, or other writings of a fellow student, is guilty of plagiarism. Plagiarism violates the academic honesty policy and is considered cheating.

    Tutoring Assistance
    Free tutoring services are available to all NMJC students through Brainfuse and the Academic Success Center located at the Pannell Library on the 1st floor.

    Withdrawal Policy
    The instructor has the right to drop any student who has failed to log on to Canvas for two weeks or more, but it is not guaranteed that the instructor will drop you. If the student chooses to stop attending a class, he/she should withdraw from the class by accessing your student account in the T-Bird Web Portal at www.nmjc.edu, or submitting the required paperwork to the Registrar’s Office by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2019. Failure to withdraw yourself from a course by this date may result in your receiving an “F” in the course. All students are encouraged to discuss their class status with the professor prior to withdrawing from the class.
