    Microbiology is a study of the importance of microbiological organisms in life processes; basic principles of microbiology; isolation; morphology; physiology; identification and applications of bacteria, fungi, and viruses; and medical bacteriology and bacterial involvement in disease. Concurrent enrollment in BI224L (laboratory) is required. This is a four credit hour course. Prerequisites: College level biology course (BI 114, BI 124, BI 134, BI 144, or BI 214A)


    Biology 224 (Microbiology) is for science/non-science majors and will transfer to most two and four year colleges. Information concerning articulation agreements with regional colleges and universities can be obtained through NMJCs Counseling Office. It is important to check with the institution to which you are planning to attend to determine transferability. Planning for course credit transfer is ultimately the student's responsibility. All students are encouraged to keep the course syllabus as it will help determine the transferability of this course credit to another institution.

Canvas does not totally support Smart phones, iPads or tablets. A PC or laptop will be needed to submit the majority of coursework. (NOTE: Non-local students are also required to have available a computer with a webcam, microphone, and appropriate Internet bandwidth to use Respondus Monitor for submission of the proctored final exam. There is a $15 annual fee.)

    Students attending New Mexico Junior College will be evaluated according to the following grading scale:
    90 - 100% = A
    80 - 89% = B
    70 - 79% = C
    60 - 69% = D
    0 - 59% = F

    For students to receive credit for coursework, it must be submitted on or before the deadline. Late work will be not be accepted for credit except under extreme circumstances (e.g. NMJC experiences technical difficulties with its Canvas server for an extended period of time on the last day of submission). If this occurs, it is the sole responsibility of the student to document the issue with NMJCs 24/7 helpdesk and report this to the instructor within 24-hours. A one-day extension may be granted at the discretion of the instructor.Additionally, original individual coursework must be submitted. Plagiarism and academic dishonesty will not be tolerated and will result in a zero for that particular assignment along with enforcement of other possible sanctions (refer to NMJC Plagiarism and Academic Honesty Policies within the syllabus).

    Grades earned on tests and assignments will be available in Canvas within 72-hours after the deadline. Some assignments will take longer to evaluate (e.g. essay, lab assignments & discussion posts).

    The following formula will be used to calculate the final course grade, which is composite between lecture and lab.

    50% - Lecture Component
    30% - Laboratory Component
    20% - Comprehensive Proctored Final Exam

    No curve on the final course grade will be available.

    Lecture Component:
    Lecture Exams have a four-day submission period. They are timed and considered closed book.

    Discussions are earned by submitting posts within the Learning Modules. To earn credit, information submitted must (a) follow guidelines set by the instructor, (b) be original, and (c) properly reference information gathered from credible scientific sources. Online encyclopedias (e.g. Wikipedia) and other opinionated resources are unacceptable.

    Additional lecture assignments include the submission of "Getting Started" activities due by Friday of the first week and a 5-paragraph essay.

    Laboratory Component: Includes lab quizzes & assignments.

    Comprehensive Proctored Final Exam: Finals will be administered during the last week of the semester by NMJCs testing center located in the Ben Alexander Building (local students) or via Respondus Monitor (non-local students).

    This is an 16-week online lecture/laboratory biology course geared for student’s majoring in science or seeking a healthcare profession. The course contains four learning modules, each 3-4 weeks in length. Canvas, NMJCs Learning Management System, will be used to deliver course information for both the lecture/laboratory component. The final course grade will be a composite of both lecture and laboratory.

    To log on to your Canvas account, use your “A” number (or Smart ID) along with a password. This is typically your birth date (e.g. 061280) until you change it in within your TBird WebPortal account. If you cannot log into Canvas and require troubleshooting help, call the 24/7 helpdesk at 575.399.2199. All coursework is to be submitted via Canvas. Instructions for submitting coursework is also available on Canvas. Should any questions arise during the semester, simply inbox message the instructor. Questions will be addressed within a 24-hour period during weekdays and 48-hours on weekends.

    Lecture Component:
    Lecture Exams:
    There are three unit (or learning module) exams, each consisting of materials presented in six chapters (see course outline). Pay close attention to deadlines for each unit exam. To access the on-line exams, (a) log-in to Canvas using Respondus LockDown Browser, (b) click on "Modules", (c) select the appropriate unit exam, and (d) enter the password "micro". (The password is case sensitive and omit quote marks). Tests are timed and are open for a period of 75-minutes once accessed. Additionally, once an exam has been submitted for grading, it cannot be re-entered. Should technical problems arise during the testing process (e.g. Canvas logs you off and you cannot regain entry into the exam), it is the student's responsibility to report the problem to the instructor within 24-hours and provide appropriate documentation of the issue via NMJC’s helpdesk (575.399.2199). There are no guarantees that late submissions or resubmissions of exams will be accepted for credit. It is at the discretion of the instructor. Feedback on exams will be provided upon request.

    Discussions: The purpose of discussions is to broaden students' knowledge by applying course content to the real world. Postings should add information beyond what is presented in the textbook. Always use proper "netiquette" when posting as information is viewed by all class members.

    Getting Started Activities: Canvas assignments are required to be completed before starting course work. They evaluate student’s technical readiness to participate in an online course. Communicate with the instructor if are unable to complete one of the required tasks due to computer issues.

    Five-paragraph Essay: Instructions and grading rubric is provided in Canvas. will be used to evaluate originality.

    Laboratory Component: (Quizzes/Assignments)
    Even though students may not be able to actually perform all exercises, they are required to read/understand materials presented in the laboratory component of the course. Laboratory exercises are modified for the on-line learner. After completion of each laboratory exercise, there is a laboratory quiz or assignments that is to be submitted. Protocol for taking quizzes is the same unit exams, except they are shorter in length and have only 20-30 minutes to complete.

    Comprehensive Proctored Final Exam:
    Local Students (within driving distance of NMJC) are encouraged to use NMJC's testing center which is free. It is located in the Ben Alexander Student Union Building. According to Testing Center policies, students must show proper picture ID and electronic devices are not allowed in the testing area. Standard operating hours are 7:30 am - 7:00 pm Monday - Thursday; however, it is strongly recommended that students confirm time of operation as they are subject to change. Students must arrive at least 1 hour before closing time. Appointments are strongly recommended but not required.

    Non-local students are required to use Respondus Monitor, which is an extension of Respondus Lockdown Browser. It requires a computer with webcam, microphone and appropriate Internet bandwidth. An ID is required along with an environmental check to ensure testing integrity is maintained. There is a practice quiz within Canvas to assist you in the set-up that is required to be submitted on or before withdrawal date of the course. There is a $15 annual fee.

    Free tutoring services are available to all NMJC students through Brainfuse or the Academic Success Center. Brainfuse is an online tutoring service that can be accessed from your course navigation menu in Canvas and there is no need to create an account.     Withdrawal Policy
    The instructor has the right to drop any student who has failed to log on to Canvas for two weeks or more, but it is not guaranteed that the instructor will drop you. If the student chooses to stop attending a class, he/she should withdraw from the class by accessing your student account in the T-Bird Web Portal at, or submitting the required paperwork to the Registrar’s Office by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 19, 2019. Failure to withdraw yourself from a course by this date may result in your receiving an “F” in the course. All students are encouraged to discuss their class status with the professor prior to withdrawing from the class.
