This course is a continuation in skills formation, technique, and expressive development studied in Painting I. The student will be encouraged to develop paintings that focus on a personal area of interest while applying the concepts presented in class. This is a three credit hour course. Prerequisite: AR 213A Painting I
This second level painting course is designed to help the student continue his/her development of creative expression, painting techniques, methods, and refine his/her skills. Please note, it is the student's responsibility to verify the transferability of this course to another school or institution. Although transferability is likely, it is not guaranteed.
Your choice of materials
The following list is the one required for Painting I. You may find this list useful, but you may use the materials you prefer. However, most of the time you will work on canvases larger than Painting I (16 x 20)--to be discussed. Note: Oil painting and solvents are not allowed in the classroom due to ventilation issues.
SUPPLY LIST – PAINTING I/II
We will discuss supplies the first day of class. It is probably best to discuss them first, then buy them. If you already have some painting supplies, but they don’t fit the specifications, please bring them for me to see. You may be able to use them. Many of the supplies may be purchased at the NMJC Bookstore; or you can also find supplies at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, online, etc. (Look for coupons online!)
1. 2 large water containers (I have several in our classroom to lend.)
2. Paper towels (Use a good brand that won’t leave paper on your canvas when wiping off paint. My favorite is Bounty select-a-size.)
3. Wear an apron or clothing that you don’t mind getting “painted.” (Acrylic does not wash out of clothing easily.)
4. Optional: Thin plastic gloves; just makes cleaning your hands easier.
Required Painting Supplies
1. Palette - Need large area for mixing in middle—not tiny “bowls.” An old microwave’s glass tray, a white metal butcher tray, white plastic palette, or glass cut from auto-glass shop all work well.
2. Canvas panels or stretched canvases (11x14)
3. Brushes – Do not buy in value pack plastic packages. They are usually cheap quality, lose hairs, and won’t perform well.

4. Acrylic Paint – Liquitex (Locally: NMJC Bookstore or Hobby Lobby) Buy name brands only; not store brands. (You will not be able to mix the colors required in class with cheap store brands.)
· 1st colors needed: Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna
· 2nd (can wait a couple of weeks): Cadmium Red Deep, Cadmium Yellow Medium
· 3rd: Yellow Oxide (or Yellow Ochre), Cadmium Red Medium (or Napathol Red)
· After that: Phthalo Blue (optional), Hookers Green (optional)
5. (1) Pastel Pencil (Cobalt Blue or orangish – You want to be able to see the mark on your white Canvas but not black.)
6. Kneaded gum eraser or “magic” white eraser
7. Color wheel
8. Gray scale (Optional, but nice to have)
9. Palette knives - Can wait until later, but buy a metal set. One must have a slanted side (discuss in class).

Students attending New Mexico Junior College will be evaluated according to the following grading scale:
90 - 100% = A 80 - 89% = B 70 - 79% = C 60 - 69% = D 0 - 59% = F
Grading Rubric – Painting I/II
A = 90 – 100 points
B = 80 – 89 points
C = 70 – 79 points
D or F = 0 – 69 points
Excellent/Good - The painting is well-developed and shows effort in all, or practically all, areas: Values, color harmony, soft/hard edges as appropriate, composition and techniques emphasize focal point, and strategies emphasized in class are applied. It is clear that time, effort, and creativity were used to produce a finished and complete painting.
Developing – The painting shows strength in several areas (see previous list) and demonstrates skills and techniques are developing but more attention needed in some areas.
Needs Improvement – Painting may not appear finished or needs improvement and focus in several areas (see previous list).
Student misses 1 day of class/instruction but submits painting on time (-10 points)
Student misses 2 days of class/instruction but submits painting on time (-30 points)
A student who accumulates 6 or more absences (misses total of 3 weeks of class or more) will only receive half credit (no more than 50 points per painting) for make-up work. After 6 absences, the student will also be in jeopardy of being dropped from the course.

If you have unusual or emergency circumstances, please discuss them with me or send a message to me through Canvas to coordinate your due date. Late work will not be accepted on a regular basis.
Students will usually complete approximately 1 painting every 2-3 weeks on 16 x 20 canvas size or larger, depending on detail. (100 points each). Time will be provided in class, but students will be expected to complete some paintings at home when needed. Grades will be assigned according to the criteria above.
RESPONSE TIME FRAME
1. Grading Schedule: Paintings are normally graded the day they are submitted and recorded in Canvas within one week.
2. Course Grades: Students may view their grades and their current average in class through the Canvas Gradebook, which averages the scores as soon as each grade is posted. The standard NMJC grading scale is utilized. Final Grades can also be seen through NMJC’s T-Bird Web-Portal (see website).
3. Canvas Messages (use Inbox) – Students can expect me to reply to Canvas messages within 24 hours, Monday – Friday (noon).
LATE WORK POLICY
Late work will only be considered under unusual circumstances, deemed unavoidable by the professor, such as an emergency. Students must contact me within ONE WEEK of a missed deadline in order to have a late assignment or make-up test considered. Late work is noted and will not be accepted on a recurring basis. Points will be deducted. See rubric above.
If you are having difficulty at any time during the semester, please contact me as soon as possible. I will be happy to discuss possible solutions with you. If you feel you may need to withdraw from the course, please discuss it with me, first. A student who is unable to successfully complete the course must submit the proper paperwork to the Registrar’s Office by the deadline, or is in jeopardy of receiving an “F”. Please note that it is the student’s responsibility to do so, not the instructor’s.
However, when a student misses the equivalent of 4 weeks of class (8 classes), it is likely that I will drop the student without notice. This is especially true if the student has not remained in contact with me. When dropped from the course, a student will not be able to return to class and will not get credit for the course.

Each student is expected to maintain the highest standards of honesty and integrity in online academic and professional matters. The College reserves the right to take disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal, against any student who is found guilty of academic dishonesty or otherwise fails to meet these standards. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, dishonesty in quizzes, tests, or assignments; claiming credit for work not done or done by others; and nondisclosure or misrepresentation in filling out applications or other College records. Attendance is required at every session of each course for which the student is enrolled. When unavoidable circumstances make attendance impossible, students must provide a satisfactory explanation of their absences to their professors. College-sponsored activities are considered excused absences and the appropriate sponsor of those students who will be absent from class will notify professors. Students having absences due to college-sponsored activities will need to make arrangements with the affected classes / professor to take care of required work; however, arrangements for make-ups should be made within a reasonable time frame, usually within one week of the absence. Regarding make-up work, absences due to late registration are considered the same as regular absences.
All cell phones and pagers must be turned off when the student is participating in any lecture, laboratory, or other learning activity.
The professor is responsible for maintaining a class environment best suited for effective learning. By registering for this class, the student is assumed to have entered into an agreement with New Mexico Junior College and the professor to attend the class regularly and to behave in an appropriate manner at all times. Disruptive behavior may result in the student being removed from the class.
Food and Drink Policy
Food items and soft drinks may not be consumed in NMJC classrooms. Students are also discouraged from bringing food and drink items into the classroom even though these items remain in sealed packaging. Bottled water is permissible.
No Children in the Classroom
In order to adhere to instructional procedures as well as maintain the safety of children, NMJC’s policy of no children in the classrooms (lecture, lab, etc.) will be followed.
Offering the work of another as one’s own, without proper acknowledgment, is plagiarism; therefore, any student who fails to give credit for quotations or essentially identical expression of material taken from books, encyclopedias, magazines and other reference works, or from the themes, reports, or other writings of a fellow student, is guilty of plagiarism. Plagiarism violates the academic honesty policy and is considered cheating.
Smoking/Use of Tobacco
New Mexico Junior College is cognizant of the health hazards associated with smoking / use of tobacco for the smoker, as well as the non-smoker. In an effort to provide a healthy environment for students, employees, and others who may frequent the campus, NMJC prohibits smoking / use of tobacco inside any campus building or facility.
Free tutoring services are available to all NMJC students through Brainfuse and the Academic Success Center located at the Pannell Library on the 1st floor.
Regular, punctual attendance is required for all classes at NMJC. Although the professor has the right to drop any student who has missed the equivalent of 2 weeks of instruction (based on a 16 week semester) whether it’s a face to face, online, or a hybrid course, it is not guaranteed that the professor will drop the student. If the student chooses to stop attending a class, he/she should withdraw from the class by accessing your student account in the T-Bird Web Portal at www.nmjc.edu, or submitting the required paperwork to the Registrar’s Office by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2019. All students are encouraged to discuss their class status with the professor prior to withdrawing from the class.
The Painting II student will discuss individual goals for the semester--what the student wants to paint and areas where he/she would like to improve. With the instructor's support and involvement, students will work on paintings throughout the semester to help develop those skills and to practice and achieve their goals for successful paintings. If desired, the student may follow the same course outline as the Painting I students (available in class), but will implement their own individual goals as the paintings are completed. In most cases, the Painting II student should plan to complete one painting every two weeks, if completed on a 16 x 20 canvas. If a larger canvas is used, the deadline may be discussed.
The Painting II student should turn in a Personal Painting Plan by the second week of class. By the 4th week of class, each student should also provide a Power Point of at least one artist's work that you admire. Explain what you like and appreciate about their work. Set an appointment to show your Power Point in class.
Your final exam will be to create a painting, that demonstrates skills and techniques you have developed during the semester. The student will choose the subject, which will then need to be approved by the instructor. Plan to paint from life, or from a photograph that you have taken. If you cannot find a photograph you have taken that you like, then several photographs can be utilized to create a composition that is original. In other words, the Final Exam cannot be painted using another person's painting as your guide or "copying" someone's photograph exactly.
On the day of you Final Exam (see dates in preceding section of this syllabi and the NMJC website), we will complete studio “clean up”, share your finished paintings, and show your painting portfolio Power Point (pictures painted over the semester, in order). Power Points or photographs in a notebook are both acceptable, but computer generated presentations are recommended. Painting II students should continue the Power Point completed in Painting I (if the course was taken at NMJC).
Note: The course outline above may be adjusted as needed at the instructor’s discretion. The pace and direction of the class may change in order to best meet the needs of the students.
